Hey Guys!
Today I am writing an important post. When to say goodbye to your trainer (and maybe start looking for a new one). Over the years I have come across some amazing trainers and some that are not so amazing. To me, having a Personal Trainer should be one of the best things you can do for yourself. Here are some signs it’s time to break up with your trainer.
- Do they workout? Yeah this happens, Personal trainers who don’t even lift. How can you take advice from someone who doesn’t follow it themselves? Make sure your trainer actually exercises and that they live a healthy lifestyle. It becomes much more motivating when you have an example of a trainer to look up to.
- Checking phone during session. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeing a trainer on their phone while their client does a set. Not only is this super UNPROFESSIONAL, it can also be dangerous. When the client is in a middle of a set anything could happen. Make sure your trainer pays 100% attention to you during the session. That they are constantly watching you, counting reps, shadowing, demonstrating the exercise, and everything possible to make the session about you! Remember you are paying them for a service, make sure you are getting the best.
- Plateau. You don’t feel like you got a good workout at the end of the session. If your trainer is doing the same old exercises, you haven’t seen any results, and you feel the same at the end of the session, then you have two options: A) Have a serious talk with your trainer or B) Find a new trainer. I make sure each of my clients have an effective, challenging, and fun workout every time they workout with me. A trainer’s job is to push you harder than you would train yourself. If they are pushing you too hard then that can be a problem as well. Workouts should always be challenging, but not impossible. Your trainer has to find the right balance for you.
- They are not yo friend. Does your trainer make you feel bad about yourself? Are they friendly? Are they even your friend? So many times I see trainers and clients not having a connection or even something as simple as a friendship. All my clients are my friends. I keep it professional, but we still have a lot of fun. It’s super important that a Personal Trainer makes their clients feel comfortable. Training sessions also become mini therapy sessions for some clients. Your trainer has to make this session all about YOU! Whether that be fitness or not.
- Strange things. They make you do strange exercises and give you strange advice. I worked at this gym many years ago and I remember these trainers would blindfold their clients and make them do lunges. Not only is this unnecessary and bizarre, but it is SO dangerous. I also heard of this one trainer telling their client to sleep with a lifting belt on at night (face palm emoji). When you work with a trainer, you’ll obviously learn some new moves, but if you feel uncomfortable with them, then speak up. If they don’t listen to you then it’s time you google search for a new trainer.
- The Narcissist Trainer. Last but not least..Sorry, but no. I’ve come across these trainers flashing their abs, talking about themselves, me, me, me, me. No. Stay away from them or if you have one, get rid of them. Like I said, the session has to be about you. If they are mostly concentrated and bragging about themselves then bye Felicia to your trainer.

My first trainer was less than stellar but I had nothing to compare to so I didn’t know any better. He had me squatting 2 – 45 plates on each side but I was barely going down….they were 1/4 squats! I felt so silly because I was barely doing the exercise. He also liked to touch my butt to “see” if the exercise was working. I should have been more assertive and told him to stop but he also shouldn’t have been doing that! Ah man.
